Welcome to my blog.
I've just finished my 2nd year of the Forest and Woodland Management BSc degree course at the University of Cumbria. On the 1st September I'm embarking on my year long (optional) placement, which I will be spending working for the Forestry Commission at the Forest of Dean.
I'm getting quite excited now, particularly because I've hopefully just found somewhere to live, which will save me from having to live above the visitor centre in the middle of the forest on my own in the DARK! I'm scared of the dark! The new house I've found is lodging with a lady who has a small holding in the garden, so I'll get to play with the geese, goats and chickens etc. I always loved The Good Life!
My year at the Forest of Dean will be spent in various departments and hopefully I'll be able to spend a lot of time with the wildlife and recreation teams, as that is where my main interests lie. But I'm willing to try anything once...or twice if I must! I know that one of my first tasks when I arrive is going to be helping to measure and value some Oak for sale at the roadside. That should be interesting as I may never get the chance to deal with Oak again! I'm definitely hoping not to be dealing with any Sitka this year (sorry Mingay!).
I also intend to use my year to develop my dissertation proposal and to carry out the required research. I'm hoping to be able to base my dissertation on the Wild Boar that are causing havoc throughout the forest, perhaps whilst eating a few too!
Anyway that's all for now, I'll keep you updated with my exploits when I actually start!
